ANGUSalive’s Great Book Getaway
Get away with a good book this summer by taking part in ANGUSalive’s Summer Reading Challenge.
The annual reading challenge aims to encourage children and adults to read over the school summer holidays.
This year's challenge, entitled The Great Book Getaway, invites everyone to lose themselves in six books over seven weeks with those managing to complete the challenge receiving a goody bag.
Angus locals can take part in the challenge by choosing six titles from their local library or via ANGUSalive's online library, provided by the Libby app. Libby is a free service for library members. Participants can read whatever they like- fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, audio books, eBooks and magazines.
Sylvia Main, Children and Families Library Lead for ANGUSalive, said: "The annual challenge is aimed to support children's reading over the school summer holidays and maintaining their reading skills. Reading has educational benefits of increasing knowledge and improving writing and vocabulary. The children can choose to read anything that interests them.
"Reading is a vital skill that can bring a lot of joy to children throughout their lives, and it doesn't matter if children are not yet reading independently; sharing a story with an adult is a great way to take part."
“For adults, reading is a wonderful pastime which has so many benefits from improving mental stimulation to reducing stress; and we have something to suit all tastes. Plus, with many people having to staycation this summer, a good read is the perfect getaway wherever you choose to spend the holidays.”
The Great Book Getaway will allow participants to escape the British summer or take part in a dream trip around the world without leaving their back yard.
The reading challenge will run from 28 June to 15 August 2021. Online registration for the event opens on Wednesday 23 June 2021.
